Benefiting From Images

How do you think can a person benefit from one's images? Simple but mind-boggling a question, isn't it? For instance, before one starts exercising, one starts warming up. Driving a car? Definitely one starts fastening his seat belt. Putting it in simple words, every person, prior to eliciting an image, is required to be in the right frame of mind. Given below is a n easy-to-follow guide that will assist you in making the most of your imagery.

Initially, a few moments of relaxation are a must. Several studies show that the best effects of imagery can be brought out only when combined with a relaxation technique. Well known psychiatrists strongly believe that it is essential for a person to be relaxed physically, only then it is possible for him to easily let his mind wander freely and dream even in broad daylight.

Start getting rid of the formal wear that is suffocating you, say start removing your tie, loosen your shirt, remove your shoes, relax by simply crossing your legs and sitting on the floor, or else try to tuck your feet under and sit in a comfortable chair. To add to the soothing effect, the lights may be dimmed or switched off. With your eyes shut tightly, start breathing deeply, visualize yourself as walking down an imaginary mountain.

There is an alternative to this, such as the use of certain meditation or relaxation techniques that aid in the relaxation of muscles, thus making an attempt at venting out that feeling which is responsible for mounting up your tension. Certain muscle flexing exercises may further induce the feeling of comfort that is gradually felt in the head, arms, neck, head, legs and feet.

Once the stage of relaxation is achieved, it is time to go further. Visualize being in one of your ideal zones , the imagining of which , will help you achieve great heights; it will take your mind far away from the thoughts of the ailment that is constantly gnawing your mind. Such ideal zones could be an hour spent in solitude on a beach,or those special moments shared with your closest friend, or with your family members. Repeat imaging this ideal zone.

Once this comfort zone is reached-at, you may make an attempt to direct your mind towards the ailment. Try using the images to the maximum, letting aside the fear of its frequent fading in and out. It need not be regarded as a grave situation as generally these images do have the tendency of going away for certain minutes, only to return.

Psychiatrists also believe that there is the complete possibility of the existence of multiple images, which the mind is steered towards. It might further in distracting your mind , making the effect of imagery less effective. Making an attempt to stick to a single image for a particular session, will make the imagery more effective.

In the absence of an image, in spite of several attempts made to recover one, try to focus on a different sensation. Make another attempt to imagine the fresh smell of the first raindrops as they start touching the scorching mother-earth; the smell of your favorite fish being fried in a pan, on a Sunday afternoon. In the absence of all this ,however, try and concentrate on the feelings that you are experiencing at that particular moment. Correlate the feeling with a particular color; if it is anger it may be red, envy may be focusing on the color green.

Many a psycho physiological therapists opine that, when a person is convinced that the session will aid in curing his ailment completely, it will create a blueprint effect on his mind, which his body can follow in order to heal him.

Thus, at the end of the session, one can breathe deeply, picture the self as re climbing that mountain and gradually become aware of the surroundings. Now its time to open your eyes ,stretch out, smile and continue with your routine. An attempt can also be made to sketch the image that was used so that it may help one to recall the same in the sessions that follow.

What is important to be noted is that this imagery exercise may be practiced for minimum 15 to 20 minutes at least once a day. As one acquires skill, the frequency may be increased as one might be able to do it as and when he wishes , for just a few moments at a time, several times a day, continuously benefiting out of it.
